Cookie cutter book, not breed specific May 3, 2005 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
I didn't think this book was helpful at all. It was too general. I also read Golden Retrievers for Dummies, and there were many similarities. I wanted a book specific to Dachshunds. Questions were posed by the writer, but never fully answered. I don't feel I know any more about Dachshunds now than before I read the book.
My Doxie has benefited from this book! March 13, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I can honestly say that my doxie has benefited from my buying this book. Growing up I only ever had big dogs (Germand Shepards and Mastiffs) so having a little hound who is prone to back problems was/is a learning experience for me! This book helped me with where to find specific resources on Dachshunds, how to prevent potential back disk problems (VERY important) and helped me to understand WHY they have these problems. Also, it gave indispensable insight into the attitude of a doxie - stubborn! but they end up "Owning" you! Great beginner book for new Doxie owners such as myself!
Really helpful and informative February 23, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Bought this right after adopting a longhair male through the Dachshund Rescue Web Page. It's packed with great content, espcially for the first-time dog owner. I've purchased many Dachshund books, but none more relevant and complete.
Most informative book I ever bought! January 19, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Shortly after getting my first dog, a smooth-haired black and tan dachshund boy in February 2003, I purchased this book and it has anything and everything you need to know about this incredible breed. I was a little worried that it might just be a generic dog book with "Dachshunds" slapped on the cover, but it only took a few pages to realize I was wrong. The "Dummies" series of books are amazing. They really tell you anything you could possibly ever need or want to know. If you are thinking about or already have a "weiner dog", then I highly recommend this book! New owners and experienced owners alike can learn something new from "Dachshunds for Dummies"!
Written by someone who really knows Dachshunds . . . November 28, 2004 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
When I picked up this book, I fully expected it to be one of those "canned" dog care books -- written with "Dachshund" haphazardly inserted in the title, only to find a generic book about all dogs, any breed.
I was wrong.
Actually, I should have known better. I tech edited a Dummies book a few years back, and it taught me just how dedicated the Dummies publishers are to providing their readers with the finest information . . . but the book I worked on was more specialized, and hey, I couldn't help but ask myself, "How easy it might it be for the Dummies people to take the same book and do 'Pugs for Dummies,' 'Poodles for Dummies,'" etc.-- all with the same, redundant information?"
How delighted I was to find that Eve Adamson has written a loving book from a Dachshund lover's true perspective, including the REAL traits exhibited by Dachshunds, along with tips on how to manage them.
I own two Dachshunds -- a mini chocolate & tan and a tweenie black & tan dapple, and if they could read this book, they would agree: This is a real Dachshund book for real Dachshund owners, written by a woman who REALLY understands the breed. (The only complaint I have is that the book recommends feeding grapes to dogs. I've been told by breeders that grapes are a NO NO and not good for dogs, do not feed.)
Thank you, Eve for writing this helpful, heartfelt book, and thank you to the Dummies folks for not being so dumb after all.
