August Magic March 5, 2001 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
It made me smile and it made me cry. For those who love dogs and believe in romance and "magic", this is must read. I enjoyed it imensely, couldn't put it down, and I have now passed it along for others to enjoy. When I finally get it back, I'm going to read it all over again.
The higest praise for an incredible first novel! May 15, 2000 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
In her first novel, Veronica Starbuck writes an enchanting tale of hopes, dreams, love, life and the magic that binds them all to create a reality unlike any you've ever experienced before. Reading "August Magic" was a joy -- Starbuck writes with a grace and elegance that sweeps the reader into the story, wrapping one up in the beauty of her captivating descriptions and engaging dialogue. Readers will have a hard time putting this treasure of a book down! I'm in total agreement with the other reviewer who suggested Oprah read this book -- if she does, she will absolutely love it!
Endearing, Romantic, Unforgettable! April 7, 2000 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Every once in a blue moon, a book comes along that sweeps the reader away into a world where anything is possible, where true romance still lives, and where dreams come true -- and "August Magic:A Novel" is just such a book! It's the tale of a young woman who adopts a dog from an animal shelter at Christmastime -- opening up a whole new chapter in each of their lives! The young woman realizes that her dog is most unusual, and has a most unusual request: to go home again. And so, the two embark on a journey to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina where an even more wonderful story unfolds -- the woman finds love, the dog gets to go home, and without giving away the ending, we all get to share in the magic that makes "August Magic" an absolutely wonderful story! I'm hoping this book catches Oprah Winfrey's attention -- she's a dog person and would love it as much as I do! This story will make you laugh, cry, and make you wish it didn't have to end!
A wonderfully touching & inspiring story! February 16, 2000 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've read many books about dogs, but never have I experienced a book the way I did with August Magic! It's truly a must-read book for any dog lover! I suggest you buy two -- one to keep and one to give as a gift (you won't want to give your personal copy away!) The story will sweep you away into a magical world where anything is possible, and where dreams really do come true. Highly, highly recommended!
Perfect for those who see the magic in love, human or canine August 25, 1999 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful, heart-warming story on many levels. It is also a real "tear-jerker", and made me see the world through canine eyes, as no other book I have read. There is no doubt that this is a "magical" love story, on several levels. A book that anyone who enjoys romance novels would enjoy. More specifically though, this is a book that any dog lover will really relish, and any Basenji owner will be unable to put down. It is easy to identify so much Basenji behavior! All in all a delightful read that will make you think, warm your heart, and wet your eye. I really didn't want the story to end so soon!
