I enjoyed reading this book! The pictures were fun and the writing was matter-of-fact and well done. Personally, I think having the training parts list "basenji" as a required item is humorous, especially since you need humor when dealing with this breed. You'd be surprized how many people out there give up their dogs because they don't try hard enough to train them to learn the most basic commands, like sit and stay.(I am speaking from experience because I'm a rescuer myself.) The authors do a good job of explaining the adoption requirements and providing sound advice regarding Basenjis.

Rescue was a mystery to me. I couldn't imagine such a wonderful breed of dog being in need of rescue. But, then again, until I read this book I didn't know nearly enough about the breed. This book was very helpful to me, and since I've gotten a puppy I still refer to it for advice. And, I did use the training help at the back. I totally disagree with the previous reviewer who said the training help was dumb! If you are a first time owner, especially with a Basenji, you need all the help you can get with training. Basenjis are stubborn, even as puppies. All in all, a really great and useful book.

I was quite excited to read this book since I brought a young Basenji home from the pound last week, but if you consider yourself an intelligent individual capable of critical reasoning, I suggest you look for training guidance elsewhere. The authors dumb down the content to such an extreme that they include "Basenji" in the list of things you will need to teach your dog to sit. Come on! I read this sad 'how-to' in an hour. ....

At last! Here's a real useful book on Basenjis! I studied many Basenji books, and only this one gave me what I really, really needed to know about this breed of dog. The information is well presented and the pictures are wonderful. What I liked best were the Tailtips that gave excellent advice, along with the way the book was written (friendly, personable).

Ever since I saw the movie "Good-Bye, My Lady" when I was young, I dreamed of owning (being owned?) by a Basenji. It wasn't until quite recently that I was able to make my dream come true, and I did it with the help of this book. It's easy to read format with lots of pictures helped me determine that yes, the Basenji was the breed of dog for me. It clearly explained the pros and cons of the breed, and alerted me to ask some good questions from breeders and other people I talked to. I can't say enough good things about the book, especially since it helped me learn so much about Basenjis! I agree with the other reviewers: if you buy one book on Basenjis, even if you aren't looking for a rescue dog, this should be THE book you buy.
